KPALS - Words to know

Below is a list of all the words the students are taught in the Kindergarten PALS program (KPALS). Please don't be worried if your son/daughter does not have all of the words mastered, as we have not completed the program.
The students have now been introduced to ALL of the sounds of the alphabet and we are now working on blends (sh, qu).
What are sight words and why are they so important?
  • Believe it or not, 50% of all reading texts are made up of the same 100 words! The most frequently used and repeated words in the English language are known as sight words.
  • Sight words are critical to reading not only because they are used so frequently, but also because many of them cannot easily be sounded out or illustrated.
  • Because they are used so often it is important that readers be able to recognize these words on sight (hence the term “sight words”). When a reader masters sight words she is able to understand at least half of the words in a particular text. By eliminating the need to decode these words, the reader is able to focus on those that are more difficult and less familiar.

Pictures

Yesterday I introduced these cute googly eyes to the Grade 1's (a variation of a pointer).  I had the students make sure their "eyes" were reading...they seemed to enjoy the eyes and giving them noses using their fingers!

Here are some of the JK/SK students using the board I created to practice the words/sounds.
